The Black And Gold City Goes Green
How do we calculate our carbon dioxide reductions?

By using the best information available from a variety of sources, we determine the positive impact your actions have on the Pittsburgh region. The calculations that you see come from national and regional averages and sources and may not exactly reflect your personal actions, but provide a best estimate for how much pollution you reduce in the Black and Gold City.

The complete list of our 2011 calculations can be found here. We encourage you to see how your impact has been calculated and learn even more about how simple actions add up to big emission reductions in our region.

What are those other calculations?

While we may be able to see buildings in the distance and streetlights don't come on at midday, Pittsburgh still faces some serious air quality issues. Air pollution in our most livable city may now be harder to see, but is still here. By reporting actions that reduce your gasoline and energy use, you can see how you positively affect the air we breathe. These actions cut back the amount of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers, and mercury in our air. Find out more information and the health affects of each here.
